Michael Galletta has always thought of himself as an artist from a very early age, but watching the students on the wheels in the ceramics class taught by Stephen Jepson at FTU in 1974 set his compass on the path he’s followed to this day. After receiving an MFA in Ceramics from Wichita State University, he worked for 7 years as a studio potter. Michael has been instructing Ceramics, Sculpture and Drawing at Valencia College since 1986 till present.
My bowls are expressions of my interest in 3D decorative surfaces and the use of appropriated imagery. I’ve directly incorporated found objects (including shells) in my sculptural mask for many years and by making sprig molds and stamps from those same objects I’ve been able to play with the bowl’s surface and form simultaneously. Each bowl is fired high-temp stoneware with one glaze layered over a second to achieve a glaze surface that accentuates the form and surface structure.
